2020 Programs

Training Program’s Beginning in the Coming Year

Portugal Nei Gong Program

Beginning in February 2020 will be a three-year long structured program in Daoist Nei Gong. Taught by Damo Mitchell and Roni Edlund, with assistance from Jason Smith, students will be taken systematically through the foundation and intermediate stages of Nei Gong internal development over a three-year period. The training will take place over several, three or four-day long events per year with each event focusing upon a different aspect of internal development. Participants will study both Qi Gong and Dao Yin exercise within the larger context of both medicinal and alchemical training.

This training is going to be held in the town of Vilamoura in the Algarve region of Portugal. Over the course of three years, students will learn how to develop and maintain a proper internal arts training regime as well as looking at how to initiate and cultivate the internal processes of Nei Gong within their own body. Static postures, moving exercises and seated work will be looked at as well as, for those interested, extra training on the wider contact of Daoism as a spiritual tradition. At the end of the three years, students will be familiar with the level 1 training of the Lotus Nei Gong School and have a fully-rounded view of Nei Gong; a practice that can then be developed over the course of the practitioners lifetime to bring health and spiritual benefits.

The first years (2020) dates for the program are as follows:

  1. Feb 27 – Mar 1 (4 days)
  2. May 28 – May 31 (4 days)
  3. Sep 17 – Sep 20 (4 days)
  4. Nov 20 – Nov 22 (3 days)

So, the training will amount to 15 days per year of direct contact time with teachers. Each day will run from 9am until 5pm with a short break for lunch and, in some cases, optional evening sessions on some of the more esoteric aspects of the traditional practice.

We will have limited spaces for this course and applicants should be aware that the training can sometimes be quite intense. This is traditional-style training and, as such, sometimes the work is hard! Students are also expected to maintain a regular training routine between meetings as well to ensure that they are able to digest and process the material for themselves.

For those who wish to carry out the structured training, and participate in all training events, the cost will be €1,200 per annum. This can either be paid in one instalment on the first training event of the year or else it may be split into two payments due on the first and third events.

If you are interested in taking part in this training then please drop us a line via the contact form on this site.

Portugal Level 2 Program

Starting in February 2020, Damo Mitchell (assisted by Roni Edlund and Jason Smith) will begin the first structured training program for the level two material of Lotus Nei Gong. This program will run for three years, with two, three-day long training events per year. The training is only open to those students within Lotus Nei Gong who have previously completed one of our QGC programs or else those who have had individual permission to join this event. For those who have not completed a QGC and who are not sure if they are allowed to join, simply send us a message and we shall consider your case individually.

It is assumed that anybody training at this level is more than capable of sustaining a regular personal practice and so, for this reason, we have less meet-up dates for this program than on equivalent programs at level one. Students will be shown what to practice and how to practice on each meet-up and then they shall go away and work on what they are being taught until the next session. Participants will be taken deep into energetic practice with a focus on the static, moving and seats work at level two of Nei Gong training. Exercises ranging from Zhan Zhuang and Xiao Zhou Tian through to Ba Xian Gong will be taught.

The first years (2020) dates for the program are as follows:

  1. Feb 7 – Feb 9 (3 days)
  2. Sep 4 – Sep 6 (3 days)

So, the training will amount to 6 days per year of direct contact time with teachers. Each day will run from 9am until 5pm with a short break for lunch and, in some cases, optional evening sessions on some of the more esoteric aspects of the traditional practice.

For those who wish to carry out the structured training, simply let us know. Courses can be paid for individually at €240 per three-day class.

If you are interested in taking part in this training then please drop us a line via the contact form on this site.

Baguazhang Program

Our Baguazhang training is an ongoing structured program that meets up four times per year in either the Algarve or in the UK during the summer months. The program is a rolling training course whereby students join for a years worth of study at a time. So, students sign up for the training in blocks of four courses which begin each November. Then, at the start of each training year, we allow newcomers onto the program, meaning that we have intake space for new students only once per year.

So, over the course of a year, students have 13 days per year face-to-face teaching whereby Damo and senior students will guide students through the drills they should practice before the next meet-up. Students will then also have access to fortnightly videos covering basic drills and exercises they should practice as a part of their ongoing development. In this way, between quarterly meet-ups and ongoing online support, we can help guide students deep into the classical Baguazhang style.

Over time, the rolling study program will teach several aspects of Baguazhang including the following:

  • Bagua Ji Ben Gong (Foundation Drills and Conditioning)
  • Bagua Jing Gong (Static Work)
  • Circle Walking Nei Gong
  • Large Frame Hou Tian Eight Palms
  • Small Frame Palm Changes

It is estimated that it should take around three years (twelve meet-up events) to get through the two sets of palms and essentially complete the foundation training in Baguazhang from within the Cheng system. Three years is around the time that foundations take in the majority of martial systems to learn the basic forms and drills.

Every two-weeks there will be a short video of a drill or principle that we would like students to practice in order to help develop their art. These will be simple movements or postures which will align with what the students are learning face-to-face in class with us over the course of the year. These videos can be from the form, Ji Ben Gong or else may include theoretical lectures or practice of the Yi Jing (Classic of Changes) as this will support the theory of the system. In some cases, it may be that we use sound files for theory rather than video but the majority of the support will be visual in nature.

Baguazhang can be quite taxing on the body, especially the lower limbs. We ask that students are aware of this and so avoid booking onto this course if they have chronic injuries to the feet, ankles, knees or hips. Whilst Taijiquan is okay for these kinds of injuries and can indeed help; Baguazhang can place a bit of a strain on these regions of the body, especially in beginners. There will be a fair amount of leg strengthening for new students to do and so we would not want anybody to do themselves harm with this training.

The first years (2019-2020) dates for the program are as follows:

  1. Nov 14 – Nov 17 (4 days) – Portugal
  2. Mar 6 – Mar 8 (3 days) – Portugal
  3. Jun 5 – Jun 7 (3 days) – UK
  4. Aug 21 – Aug 23 (3 days) – UK

This means that the training amounts to 13 contact days per year with online support between these meetings. The training will run from 9am until 5pm each day with a short break for lunch. Note that two of the events each year are held in the Algarve but two events re held in the UK. These are the events in the months of June and August. This is because these months are considered high-season for tourists in the algarve and so accommodation costs and flight costs to Portugal can be very high. To help avoid these high costs, we are going to run the two summer events in the UK.

The cost of the training for LNG members is €1,000 which is to be paid at the start of the annual training, on the November event. Those who wish to may split this payment into two instalments of €500 euros to be paid on the first and third events of each training year.

If you are interested in this training or have any further queries then please message us via the contact form on this site.
